Food Security

The Issue

In a nation of considerable wealth, and in a state where agriculture is a special part of our heritage, it is ironic that basic food needs are inadequately met in Laramie County. Low income levels, unstable employment and rapidly rising food costs all combine to challenge the ability of many local families to secure the food they need. Many eligible families do not participate in government food programs, instead relying on emergency food banks and community meal programs. Others forego food in order to pay for childcare, housing, transportation and other basic family needs.

Our Plan

LCCP members provide organizational and logistical support to local food-providing agencies to streamline the delivery of assistance, reduce overlaps in service, and strengthen the food safety net. We improve communication and outreach mechanisms so people understand the options they have—from government food programs to charitable distributions. Members focus on helping community members connect to various programs, and are implementing a countywide tracking system to assure that food needs are met effectively and comprehensively.
